Title : Building confidence in outer space activities : CSBMs and earth-to-space monitoring Material Type: books Authors: Pericles Gasparini Alves Publisher: Dartmouth Publishing Publication Date: 1995 Size: 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-85521-630-3 General note: Includes bibliographical references Languages : English (eng) Descriptors: Astronautics--International cooperation ; Security, International Abstract: "Building confidence in outer space activities" sets out to clarify some of the prerequisites and modalities of a confidence-building process in outer space. More precisely, it is the result of efforts undertaken by several experts on outer space matters who examine the role of Earth-to-space monitoring in: enhancing the safety of outer space activities, and preventing the deployment of weapons in that environment. In this context, the experts efforts are particularly intended to address the political, technical, and economic dimensions of Earth-to-space monitoring. However, their ultimate objective is to ascertain the extent to which the different existing CSBMs proposals are politically and technologically possible as well as financially viable. After such an evaluation, the book concludes by proposing the creation of an International Earth-to-Space Monitoring Network (ESMON) as the most appropriate means to improve both transparency and predictability in outer space activities. Title : Climate change as a security risk Material Type: books Authors: German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) Edition statement: Includes bibliographical references and index Publisher: Earthscan Publication Date: 2008 Pagination: xii, 248 p. Layout: ill. col. maps Size: 28 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84407-536-2 General note: Includes bibliographical references and index Languages : English (eng) Descriptors: Climatic changes--International cooperation ; Environmental policy ; Security, International Class number: QC981.8.C5 Abstract: Without resolute counteraction, climate change will overstretch many societies' adaptive capacities within the coming decades. This could result in destabilization and violence, jeopardizing national and international security to a new degree. However, climate change could also unite the international community, provided that it recognizes climate change as a threat to humankind and soon sets the course for the avoidance of dangerous anthropogenic climate change by adopting a dynamic and globally coordinated climate policy. If it fails to do so, climate change ville draw ever-deeper lines of division and conflict in international relations, triggering numerous conflicts between and within countries over the distribution of ressources, especially water and land, over the management of migration, or over compensation payments betwenn the countries mainly responsible for climate change and those countries most affected by its destructive effects.
