Description: | After concluding that most undergraduate students are not interested in STEM disciplines and taking into account the admiration for space, an educational activity has been developed to increase their engagement in this field. The proposed project-based workshop consists of designing, manufacturing and launching a low-cost high-altitude balloon to take photographs of the stratosphere. A functional prototype has been built, tested and validated: this contains a GPS tracker, a camera, an EPS box, a parachute and a helium balloon. The selection of the components has been done trying to minimize the operational cost and maximizing the reliability of the design; the prototype weighs 200g and is estimated to reach an altitude of 27 km. The educational activity is a 5-day workshop in which the students will follow a booklet that will guide them through the process of building their own HAB, launching it and eventually recovering it to obtain the photographs. A business plan has been developed to study the viability of the activity, to analyze the market and to identify the main legal aspects. A price of 2,200 has been proposed for an all-included educational activity to instruct the development and launch of 3 HAB. |
