Description: | This report covers solar observation using a Solarscope solar telescope, kindly donated by Dr. Kesslerfrom Manx Precision Optics Ltd. and Solarscope, Isle of Man. The provided fully-equipped telescopewith aperture of 70 mm is capable of observing the solar chromosphere safely via the hydrogen-alphaemission line at 656.281 nm. This report discusses the theory behind what can be seen through theSolarscope, focused on the solar activity as a result of the solar magnetic field, and discusses the visualpotential by presenting meaningful photographs made using the Solarscope. Features such as sunspotsand prominences can be observed with the Solarscope. The instrument is explained in detail, includinginstructions on how to set it up, and is compared with the competition through a market analysis. Nextto a theoretical approach, there was also an experimental approach as presented in this report, as theproject had a significant visual component. Self-made photographs from solar observations are pre-sented and a workshop is proposed associated to an education and outreach plan. Although currentlythe Sun is in a minimum level of activity, the Solarscope proofed to be a high-end instrument to observethe exciting dynamic signs of solar activity. The Solarscope creates a good opportunity to provide ahands-on experience to educate students in solar activity and space weather in the form of a workshopwhere the Sun can be observed with the candidates’ own eyes. |
