Description: | Space is difficult. The US and China relationship is complex. How can a difficult relationship in a harsh environment work? The status of the US and China relationship in space is a byproduct of other issues and has suffered dramatically over the last decade because of US legislation. While China moves into the front of space capabilities across the globe, as evidenced by the developments in their program over the last few years, the US must strive to find common ground for discussion. In this case, the common ground can be science, or more directly, space science. With the establishment of the Chinese Space Station, Tiangong in low-earth orbit and the successful autonomous rendezvous capability with the space station, China has demonstrated its scientific and technological strength. China has extended its hand to participate and share its success with the world. China's most recent White Paper on space, "China's Space Program: A 2021 Perspective, reiterates the cooperative mindset in its space endeavors. The space program in China is a critical element in their national strategy, as it once was in the US. China has offered the opportunity to work in an international collaborative environment for the advancement of space science. The question remains if the US will take that opportunity to move past other issues and embrace the principle of exploration and utilization of outer space for peaceful purposes for all humankind. This paper reviews the history of the US/China relationship in space. It proposes a way forward for both countries' benefit and humanity as we look to the stars to expand our presence in space. |
