Description: | The onset of World War II hastened the secretive development of the first French rocket more than 75 years ago. The 1950s saw France dominating the European space landscape, it also became the third country in the world to successfully launch a satellite. Since then, French launch vehicles have evolved significantly through various programs such as Diamant and Ariane. The Ariane program is one of the most reliable launchers in operation today and has dominated the telecommunications satellites delivery market to Geostationary Earth Orbit in recent years. This report explores the history of the French space program, from its inception up to the development of the Ariane 6 program. Studying its evolution in both historical and technical contexts, this work discusses French launchers and the French contribution to European launcher programs. The report includes an overview of different joint international projects which helped to advance certain missions and played a decisive role in the successful development of the French space program. |
