Description: | This report undertakes a narrative review on the role of the gut microbiome in human health, factors that can affect and change the microbiome, how the gut microbiome changes in the spaceflight environment, and measures astronauts can take to maintain their gut health during spaceflight. Until now, research has been focused more on immediate health concerns in spaceflight, such as Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). As missions grow longer in length, a better understanding of how microbiomes perform long-term in space will be needed to adequately protect astronaut health on future missions, such as the planned interplanetary missions to Mars. |
