Description: |
In the coming decades, the Lunar Gateway will play a pivotal role in facilitating unprecedented longduration human exploration missions in deep space. Serving as a testbed for Mars forward capabilities, the Gateway will help close the technical and operational gaps required for Mars and beyond. The two white papers, "The Lunar Gateway as a Testbed for Mars Forward Capabilities," and the "Gateway and Cislunar Infrastructure for Sustainable Deep Space Exploration" provide comprehensive recommendations to extend human life support and enhance the human experience in preparation for future Mars missions. Key focus areas in the first white paper include the extension of human life support systems, encompassing air, water, and food loop closures, waste management, and recycling capabilities. The integration of in-space manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing and In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU), along with lunar dust's effects on crew health are examined. Additionally, new modules are proposed to extend the Lunar Gateway, creating unique research opportunities for deep space missions.
In the second white paper, crucial elements for ensuring a sustainable human presence on the Moon are examined such as communication systems, navigation networks, energy solutions, and international partnership strategy. Technological innovation and promoting commercial activities in space are proposed with the goal of creating a self-sufficient space ecosystem that can serve as a model for future missions to Mars and other deep space destinations. These white papers provide ways to leverage the Lunar Gateway as a testbed to bridge the technical and operational gaps necessary for Mars forward capabilities. The recommendations provided will ensure that astronauts have the necessary resources and support systems to thrive on long-duration missions, paving the way for humanity's journey to Mars and beyond. |
