Description:
|
This paper presents two innovative proposals for practice in space sustainability. The first paper introduces the Lunar Surface Sustainability Assessment Tool (LUSSAT), designed to prospectively evaluate the environmental sustainability of activities on the Lunar surface. LUSSAT is based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, defining assessment boundaries and scoring criteria, setting the standard for sustainability on the Moon. The second paper presents a novel research and development program, providing a scalable funding mechanism specifically aimed at research and innovation into space sustainability. The Sustainable Technologies for Advanced Research in Space (STARS) program provides financial support to technologies which advance sustainability in space, applicable to both public and private sectors. Together, these papers provide a forward looking, novel and necessary basis for the next generation of space exploration.
