Description: |
Smart Transportation systems play a crucial role in disaster response on Earth and, eventually, on the Moon, by enabling swift resource mobilization, real-time data dissemination for mobility, and enhanced communication for coordinated emergency services, thus mitigating consequences in both environments.
The first white paper of this report assesses technologies that can mitigate the consequences of flooding in urban areas on Earth, improving safety and efficiency, and ensuring timely and effective relief during such emergencies. Natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, fires and floods cause significant damage worldwide, with floods being particularly destructive. In 2022, floods resulted in approximately 7,400 deaths globally. The increasing urban populations and climate change exacerbates the impact of flooding, causing infrastructure damage, disrupting emergency services, and affecting public safety. Additionally, these technologies have dual-use applications for the Moon, where lessons learned from Earth’s disaster response, such as flood management, can inform more efficient Search and Rescue and emergency logistics solutions. Establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon marks a significant milestone in space exploration, requiring Smart Transportation systems to address the effects of the Moon’s extreme environment, including; temperature fluctuations, radiation, and micro-meteorite impacts. The second white paper of this report explores scenarios for lunar Search and Rescue operations, proposing advanced technologies such as AI-equipped spacesuits, pressurized rovers, and robust communication networks to ensure astronaut safety and effective emergency response. It highlights the need for international collaboration and innovative solutions for a sustainable human lunar presence. This report compiles both white papers and offers the reader Smart Transportation solutions to help mitigate the consequences of natural disasters like floods in urban areas on Earth and enable Search and Rescue operations on the lunar surface. |
