Description:
|
The great potential at present clearly evident in the field of infrared spectroscopy will almost certainly be realized within the next decade or two. The IRAS mission has completed one of the pre-requisites, namely an all-sky photometric survey. Major space missions utilising cryogenic infrared telescopes have been approved in Europe (ISO), and seem likely in the U. S. A. (SIRTF); plans for space submillimeter telescopes are firming up. On the ground, large telescopes optimised for infrared observations are now in operation at high-altitude sites and specialized submillimeter facilities are under construction. The particular advantages of planned, very large telescopes for infrared observations are widely accepted. Within this context, the selection of "Galactic and Extragalactic Infrared Spectroscopy" as the topic for the XVIth ESLAB Symposium was particularly timely. This book, which represents the Proceedings of the Symposium, is divided into parts dealing with the physical processes whichlead to spectroscopic features in the infrared, and those which review the current status of observations of a specific class of objects and their interpretation.
