Description: | This paper looks at the differences between control moment gyroscopes and momentum wheels. A mathematical description of frame transformations in 3D space is developed using Eulers rotational equations. This is then used in conjunction with torque relations to describe how scaling physical parameters associated with momentum wheels and control moment gyros affect torques induced on spacecraft. It is found that control moment gyros offer unparalleled advantages over momentum wheels. |
